I once had the same predicament. I had no idea where to start. What do I need to learn? There are so many information out there on the net. Which do I focus on first?

I have gone through a whole bunch of things being offered on the net. In the end, I have organized them into the following topics for you to learn about doing business on the internet.

1. Market Research
Before you even start building up your online business. You should, no, not should. You must perform your market research. You must determine that there is a market for your business online. You must also identify who your competitors are. How are they doing it online? Is there a specific area in your business that is really in demand?

There are numerous tools out there on the internet to help you do your market research. When you are just starting, you should just use the many free services available. Get the hang of things. Get the paid versions once you are familiar with the flow of things. The two free tools I used the most are Google Search and Free WordTracker Tool.

Use the Free WordTracker Tool to identify your potential keywords. Then run the keywords in Google to identify your market and competitors.

2. Internet Marketing Basics
To create any of your internet marketing sites, you need to learn at least some basics about the internet. you must at least understand some of the industry technical jargon and acronyms like URL, FTP, HTML, PHP, Links, IP address, etc.

You will need to understand how the internet works. You need to learn how to use FTP to upload your files to your website. You need to understand how your domain name, ip address and your website URL relate to each other. You must also be able to identify between a domain host and a web host.

You will need to open accounts in at least one payment service provider. One payment service which is probably the most widely used at this moment is PayPal. I recommend that you at least open up a paypal account to facilitate your online payments.

3. Website Creation
An online business is not an online business unless it has some form of web presence. Basically you will need a website of some form to promote your business on the internet. There are many forms of business websites available - Corporate Website, Blog, eCommerce and Portal Sites.

You don’t need in depth knowledge of HTML to create a website. There are plenty of tools around to help you create your website. Among the popular tools at the moment are:

• Microsoft Frontpage
• Microsoft Visual Web Developer
• Macromedia Dreamweaver
• Linspire Inc NVU

There are also plenty of website templates for you to start with. Just download these templates. Modify them with your own content and images. Upload them into your server and you have your website ready.

4. Search Engine Optimization
A website is a website is a website. What differentiates one website from the other? Why is a particular website appearing on the first page of an internet search? How do you get your website to appear on the first page of an internet search? Why would you want to appear on the first page of a search?

If you own an online business, you must learn about SEO and implement it on your website. It’s your long term traffic generation strategy. You get this right, you ensure traffic to your website. These are quality targeted traffic.

5. Pay Per Click
One other method of generating traffic to your website is by you purchasing advertisement units from various internet advertising providers. Better known as Pay Per Click (PPC), you only pay for your advertisement when someone actually clicks on your ads. Although this strategy has costs, it’s the fastest way to get traffic to your online business website.

Google Adwords is currently the most actively used Pay Per Click service at the moment. If this is what you would like to venture into, open up an account in Google Adwords.

Before jumping into this marketing strategy, however, I would highly recommend that you try to learn a thing or two about PPC itself. This is to avoid you from wasting your hard earned cash in putting out ads that do not make any profits to your business.

6. Article Marketing
This marketing methodology, similar to SEO, is also a long term traffic generation strategy. There are many article directories in the internet. You just need to write an article related to your line of business and submit it to any number of these article directories. Your article will contain links to your own website. When this article gets published in the directories, they will add backlinks to your website.

A large number of websites also regularly post articles from article directories. Your article also stand a chance at being picked to be posted into any of these websites. If they are picked, you also gain a backlink from these websites. The more backlinks you have from relevant websites, the higher your page ranking is in the eyes of the search engines.

7. Tracking and Monitoring
You now have a website targeting a specific market niche. The traffic generation strategies you deploy are bringing in a lot of traffic. Have you got a clue which marketing strategies are actually bringing in the profits? Where exactly are your buyers coming from? Are all your marketing campaigns giving you a good ROI? Can you identify areas in your website and marketing campaign that needs to be enhanced?

You need to address the questions above. The way to gain some insight to your website and campaign performance is by putting in tracking and monitoring tools or agents. These allow you to collect statistics from your website and marketing campaigns. The statistics, in turn, provide you with data from your website and promotions on areas which are performing and not performing.

You get graphical reports that clearly shows where your website visitors are coming from. You are shown the actual site they were at before they arrive into your webpage. A whole bunch of reports are available at your disposal. You get to know where in the world your visitors are located in. You get information about the screen size your website is displayed in. What is the most common browser being used by your visitors.

You can use all the information provided to you to your advantage. Tune up a particular page for a different keyword if the one in use currently is not bringing in traffic. Change a particular promotional statement if the one in use is not performing. Put more focus on marketing at a particular website if the site shows a lot of visitor coming from it. That is among the things you can do to further tune your online business according to the analytic you gathered.

8. Ads
The most widely used method of monetizing your online business website is by putting in ads. There are a multitude of advertizing service in the internet. Google Ads is probably the one almost everyone is using at this moment. Monetizing with ads is simple. You can subscribe, for free, to any one of the advertisement providers like Google. You also have the option of offering advertising slots on your website to anyone. You have to market your ad slots yourself, though.

While services like Google is very easy to setup, offering ad slot of your own in your website is much more profitable. Getting people to pay for advertisement is somewhat hard though. Unless your site is really well know in the internet.

9. Affiliates
You don’t have any product to offer on your website? This is where affiliate marketing comes to play. Really, in the internet world, you don’t really need to have your own product to make money online. Just register as an affiliate to some other product. As an affiliate, you get to market that product and get commissions from sales that was attributed to you. All you need to do is promote the product in your website and provide a link with your affiliate id to the user if they would like to purchase.

A very large number of internet marketers are making huge sums of money this way. They are simply promoting other people’s products and living on commissions they make from the sales they bring in.

10. Joint Ventures
Do you have a SUPER product you want to promote? What’s a SUPER product? A product that contains features which are highly in demand in the market. A product that solves a problem faced by a large number of people.  A product that comes with a whole lot of bonuses which add to it’s main features.

With a SUPER product, you can then approach a couple of other BIG players in the same market to jointly promote your product together. A joint venture is almost similar in concept to affiliate marketing. The main difference being the relationship among joint venture partners. This strategy requires that all parties in the joint venture know each other. They actually communicate among themselves and discuss about the product they are promoting together. You can probably think of your joint venture partners as your SUPER Affiliates.
